Mix06 live (1): You will be assimilated

I'm at the Mix06 conference in Las Vegas where I will be liveblogging Bill Gates' keynote speech which starts in a few minutes. Mix06 is surfing on the wave of Web 2.0, where social software applications, rich user interaction (using techniques like Ajax), aggregation, user generated content etc. are all mixed and 'mashed up' to take the web to a new phase in its existence. There was a contest where prospective attendees could design a new layout for the Mix06 website to win a free ticket. I especially liked the entry where Bill Gates was morphed into Elvis, which fits very will into the Vegas atmosphere. Before I start blogging the presentations, here are some pictures from the surroundings.

Las Vegas has its own public transport system (it didn't cost the taxpayer a single dollar though): the monorail. Ironically, this monorail is packed with Star Trek slogans: "Invasion of the Borg", "Resistance is futile", "You will be assimilated". Promoting the Star Trek exhibition at the Las Vegas Hilton, the slogans are ironic whith respect to this Microsoft event, because these are also slogans used by Microsoft's critics to demonize the market dominance and the alleged monopolistic behaviour of the software giant.




Mix06 is taking place at the Venetian, one of Vegas' most luxurious hotels.
