Bojinka II

A major terror plot has been disrupted in the UK. The plan was to blow up five to ten airliners above the Atlantic, on their way from Heathrow to the US. Airlines that were targeted: United, American, Continental. 21 people arrested - most of them Pakistanis - possibly up to fifty were involved. This could have been much bigger than 9/11.

Sounds like a remake of Operation Bojinka from 1995:

The aircraft would have blown up over the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea almost simultaneously. If this plan worked, several thousand would have perished, and air travel would have been shut down worldwide for days, if not weeks. The U.S. government estimated the prospective death toll to be about 4,000 if the plot had been executed.

I think we should first realize we are already at war and then treat the enemy accordingly. How did the English treat the German civilians visiting or living in Britain?

indeed, yet shouldn't we go for something much better?

Then tell me what we have now????????????????????????????

All do respect, but would not like to live in a society ruled by such 'efficient' safety measures. It would most likely evolve in some sort of fascism.

Muslim employees in airport facilities are also a serious safety threat. Discarding them would be a matter of common sense, comparable to intelligence services not hiring people with suspect relatives or antecedents.

It's pretty naïve to believe muslims couldn't convince kaukasian to work with them, either fully conscious or by plain stupidity. E.g. Jozef De Witte might be handed over some explosives.
Search everybody or nobody at all. Freedom comes from corner-solutions, not from a complex set of laws.

I think Dof is talking about muslims hiding bombs in granny's bag

@dof: muslim grannies fall under the denominator 'muslim', i.e. potentially lethal.

There's a very good reason to search all those demented or near-demented grannies:

It's called Nizar Hindawi.

In summary: political correctness kills. It overloads security with checking grannies and buddist monks as thoroughly as muslims whereas only the latter are lethal.

Ok, civil liberties ARE important, but if you do nothing, there will be no civil liberties.

It is important to stress the last part of my first sentence too. That is the dilemma we are facing.

@Cogito: "If there is one area in which etxxxc dxxcrxxxxxtxxn would yield, it is in the checking of people in airports."

that's the reason why it doesn't happen, because it is ethnic discrimination, that's why my granny is searched as well.

@Luc: when I first heard about it, I thought there might be a possibility that the English police had overreacted to some more or less disturbing findings, and I thought they would not mind colouring their own terrorist-catching-capabilities with grotesque exagerations.
But it all seems to be real. Scotland Yard indeed performed extremely well.

Ceterus censeo that checking everyone is silly. If there is one area in which etxxxc dxxcrxxxxxtxxn would yield, it is in the checking of people in airports.

"Very disturbing to read about the first plot. (in 1995!)"

Hmmm. Help me out here. Who was US President then? What did he do to piss off the Ummah?

And it just gets better: http://www.debbieschlussel....

"* The Dearbornistan Terror Boys claim that they had the flight manifests and airport security info because the mother of Ali Houssaiky works for Aircraft Services International Group at Detroit Metro Airport."

Of course, it's possible that all this is a Karl Rove plot to bolster the GOP in the runup to Election Day.

Het was niet alleen Bojinka II: http://www.debbieschlussel....

"...The Houssaiky family has called the Michigan American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee to complain about the arrest and ensuing investigation. The organization, headed by "former" Islamic terrorist and FBI award revokee Imad Hamad, is telling people "not to rush to judgment."

600 cellphone chips. A boss under investigation by the FBI. $10,000 in cash. Passenger lists from flights and info on airport security checkpoints. Lying to police about it. They hail from Dearborn, home to thousands of Hezbollah-supporting Islamists. And we are not supposed to "rush to judgment"?"...

Joe, we zullen dan maar wachten zeker tot er 4000 doden vallen? En Mabus, kijk eens in de spiegel. Ik denk dat je hoofd in je gat zit.

yes, Luc, I am also supspicious about this ... it comes in very handy in the moemtn for the governments of US en UK and it gives the oppurtunity to once more set higher rules ... take more freedom from the American people. With all the respect, but that is my idea and there i a lot more peopl who think the same way, you can not jsut say we are all conspiracy theorists, that would be too easy ... if you hae ve some time, watch this:
http://video.google.com/vid...
there's simply too much questions to be answered ...
and this:

There's more to it, don't believe everything they tell you on th news Luc ... ask questions, demand answers!

What we saw today could be a "wag the dog" scenario, but it also could be not. If after "thorough observations" they caught the alleged terrorists, OK, well done. But I find there's a little stink around it. The actions of today were too spectacular and "mediatic". And then came Bush' speech full of mind-sticking slogans on security and "islamic fascists". So even if it was all true, I found they scared the people more than necessary.

#24639

LVB

"I hope they can prove it's true". What? You mean there's a chance that it was totally fake? Sounds like the conspiracy theories of the same people that claim that Bush knew about 9/11 and did nothing. Now they will criticize the British for knowing and doing something...

#24638

Cogito

I hope they can prove it 's true. If not, all anti-terrorist security measures in the world and in particular in the UK will appear absolutely ridiculous and grotesque.
Anyway I think it would be more efficient and human to only check people whose potential-terrorist-likeliness is higher than 80 %. That should not be too difficult and would have no influence on safety. I will not be more specific on the subject of which criteria have to be taken into consideration to determine someone's PTL-factor, as I do not want to say illegal things, to avoid that I would express forbidden opinions, since it is obvious that free speech is an ancient aberration with its origins in a pre-civilised era.
