Een Nobelprijswinnaar aan het woord

Kijk, dat typeert een grote geest: complexe dingen op een simpele manier kunnen uitleggen...

ladies and gentlemen, dit is de definitie van een republikein volgens dendof. ik kan niet wachten tot het volledige boek van onze woef eraan komt. nobelprize stuff!

@joe: Je lacht met de reactie van dendof. Maar ik denk dat dendof net dé essentie weergeeft waarom velen de Republikeinen verkiezen boven de Democraten.

I recently asked my friend's little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"

She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.' Her parents beamed. 'Wow...what a worthy goal.' I told her, 'But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.'

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, 'Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?'

I said, 'Welcome to the Republican Party.'

Her parents still aren't speaking to me.

A son comes home from his first semester at university, and his father meets him at the airport. They immediately begin to argue politics, the father being a staunch Republican and the son a die-hard Democrat. Finally, the father says, "Son, I'm so happy you're home, can we just put the politics aside and enjoy your visit?"

So, they begin to speak of other things. Eventually the subject turns to classes and roommates.

"How'd you do academic-wise your first semester?" the father inquires.

"I got straight A's," the son beamed.

"Well done. How about your roommate?"

"Not so great actually. Straight C's. He partied all the time, slept through classes, and just had all-round bad study habits."

"Well I've got an idea," exclaims the father. "How about I call up the Dean and ask him to take one point from your GPA and give it to your roommate? That way you both end up with a B average."

"Are you kidding me? I worked hard for those A's, and he just moped around the room and partied all semester? That's ridiculous!"

"Son, calm down. I've just got one more thing to say: welcome to the Republican Party."

Ik verkies het Amerikaanse systeem boven de West-Europese verzorgingsstaat, die méér dan in de VS gesteund is op gedwongen herverdeling (lees: hoge belastingen en *verplichte* staatsgestuurde sociale zekerheid). En nu wil Obama dat Europese model ook in de VS gaan invoeren. Net die factor die het succes van Amerika vormt, namelijk eigen verantwoordelijkheid en persoonlijke zelfredzaamheid, wil Obama afzwakken.

Het wordt trouwens tijd voor een European Republican Party, zoals Boudewijn Bouckaert ooit eens schreef (maar zou hij daar zelf nog in geloven, nu hij bij LDD is, de partij die lààiend enthousiast is over Obama?)

In mijn tijd (waw) leerden we op school nog de fabel van de krekel en de mier. Een fabel inderdaad. De krekel heeft intussen immers het staatsapparaat aan zijn zijde.

"Als Rush Limbaugh in dergelijke termen over de Democraten spreekt.....".
maar dat doet Limbaugh natuurlijk niet, platvloers, tendentieus-populistisch en leugenachtig als hij is. Krugman zal zich nooit tot zo'n niveau verlagen.

Wie het ganse artikel leest en hem omwille van dit woordje "crazy" hem vergelijkt met Limbaugh en hem bovendien een boertige brulboei noemt vind ik zelf - pardonnez-moi - ook een tikje crazy.

Luc, jij met je adembenemende factual knowledge zou toch goed moeten weten wat "crazy" betekent. Ik zal je helpen, volgens de Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English in deze volgorde:
1. strange, not sensible. this idea sounds crazy
2. be crazy about sth: liking someone/sth very much
3. angry or annoyed
4. we're going to have to work like crazy
5. excited
6. mentally ill ("krankzinnig")

@ joe: volgens Oxford English Dictionary is 'crazy' toch in de eerste plaats (na de verouderde betekenissen 'ziek', 'gebrekkig' of 'geruïneerd'):

4.a. of unsound mind; insane, mad, demented, 'cracked'
4.b. showing derangement of intellect; insane, mad.

Ik vind Krugman al jaren een socialistische windhaan en "unfit" voor een Nobelprijs.
Verder vind ik economie geen wetenschap en een Nobelprijs onwaardig.

Vrede en literatuur zijn ook geen wetenschappen. Wiskunde wel. Het verband tussen "wetenschap" en "Nobelprijs" lijkt me niet zo sterk.

Maar inderdaad, ik heb altijd erg moeten lachen met de pseudowiskunde in de cursussen economie, met al die excuusgrafiekjes over vraag en aanbod op de eerste pagina's. Von Neumann zijn game theory en het Nash equilibrium, da's dan weer andere koek, maar die vinden weinig economische genade in de ogen van Nassim Taleb en zijn ludic fallacy.

So there they were, in the democratic party now. Now justice was about to be done, 'cause after all, justice is exactly what de democrats are about. So they delegated their vote to democratic politicians who could now decide for them how to have this longwanted justice done. Politicians did what politicians do and took their responsibility readily out of their hands but that was alright because they were going to do eh justice. Justice was done, taxes were raised, economy dropped and Mode C student came down to Mode A student's income, while that of the latter dropped to almost zero. Mode A then could not buy any product of Mode C anymore and BEHOLD! Their incomes miraculously matched all of a sudden! Justice was done and both ended up with almost nothing - but they shouldn't have been materialistic to begin with anyway.

In the evening, in the ever darkning dusk the president of the democratic party could be seen crawling home in the dust trailing his belley over the ground, revealing his true identity all too much while believing the dusk hid it. But in the moonlight the old snake's trail could be followed where the president had crawled while laughingly throwing away the remaining cores of the apples he had every eager new democrat bite in, to seal their pact of responsibility transfer in trade of the oath to subordinate and obey to their servants who as such had become their masters.

Ik ben het overigens eens met de vaststelling dat (soms simplistische) eenzijdigheid een reactie uitlokt die vaak ook (soms simplistisch) eenzijdig is.
