Tolerantie (1)

TO OUR INTERNATIONAL READERS
Due to the overwhelming interest for this story from overseas, I'm summarizing these events in English.
1. After the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, Dutch artist Chris Ripke painted the words "Thou shalt not kill" on the window of his atelier. Almost immediately, the people from the mosque next to his atelier protested against this. They found the slogan too provocative, and they called the mayor of Rotterdam, Mr Opstelten. The mayor decided that the slogan should be removed, and he ordered the police to send a patrol to the premises. When Dutch cameraman Wim Nottroth arrived and started to film the action, the police ordered him to stop filming, which he refused. When the police started to remove the slogan, Nottroth tried to prevent this. He was promptly arrested by the police and was put in jail for three hours.
2. Follow-up on http://lvb.net/item/654: After huge coverage by Dutch weblogs and media, mayor Opstelten has apologized. The removal of the slogan was an error, he acknowledged, as was the request to the cameraman to stop filming. But the arrest of the cameraman was right, he said, because citizens have to follow the orders of the police. Funny detail: after the removal of the slogan, a picture of pork meat became visible, a remainder from a supermarket that was there before Ripke made it his atelier. And cameraman Nottroth, who protested against the removal of the slogan and tried to prevent it, said in an interview that he is an atheist.
