Mix06 live (2): Bill Gates' keynote

Bill Gates at Mix06 in Las Vegas:

RSS is very important. Things like e-mail rules (implemented in Outlook) can be applied in RSS readers. RSS is the start of the programmable web, we call it "wiring the web". It's one of the mechanisms that are turning the web into a programming environment We are strongly involved in WS-star.

Office 2007 which ships later this year will have a lot of browser-like and website-like functionality, using our new Atlas technology.

WPF, Windows Presentation Foundation will replace Powerpoint. It takes graphics, interaction and presentation to a new level.

Bill introduces two people from Myspace.com. The explain how Windows Vista technology enabled them to make a more efficient use of their server capacity. They also demonstrate how MySpace.com will use the Windows Sidebar feature. When their presentation ends, a guy from the audience shouts: "Give us open API's please!". The audience applauds. Yes, an open interface to other services would be great to interact with the 64 million registered users of MySpace.com... Update: "Identity Woman" is blogging that the guy shouting is Marc Canter.

Ashley Highfield, director of new media and technology from the BBC explains how Microsoft Mediacenter helps them to exploit the huge archive. New generation search tools, new kinds of metadata will be necessary.

A guy from Microsoft (or from the hotel?) just tells me it is prohibited to take pictures. Why? I didn't even use my flashlight, so I'm not disturbing the audience... In the mean time I see other people taking pictures WITH their flashlight...
