Condi meets Eddy
When Condoleezza Rice arrived at Brussels Airport yesterday, she was not welcomed by Belgian foreign minister Karel De Gucht, but by Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx. "At the special request of the U.S. Embassy", according to Belgian media, who added that in Japan, Dr. Rice was welcomed by a famous sumo wrestler. Mr Merckx, who turned 60 just four days ago, said to Belgian tv station VTM that he was impressed with Dr. Rice's vibrant personality.
Secretary of State Rice is in Brussels to attend a conference on reconstruction and debt relief for Iraq. At the 2003 Madrid conference, 33 billion dollars in grants and loans were promised to Iraq. But only 10% of the 13 billion dollars from countries other than the U.S. has actually been delivered, according to Iraqi officials.

I don't get the point, please explain.

Delphine middle-aged? Ouch, I hope she does not read LVB's comments section (fat chance).
And Merckx does indeed look good. He's gotten much slimmer just recently. Maybe he had foreknowledge of Rice's visit?

her vibrating device?! You know, I come over to the Continent for a little highbrow intellectual exchange and what do I find? Men making naughty remarks. The last time I looked Luc was blogging about a middle-aged woman making paper mache phalluses.
Merckx looks pretty damn good for 60.

Dr. Rice admitted she inadvertently had turned on her vibrating device stumbling down the stairs of the plane. But in a swift and witty change of subject, she diligently returned the compliment to Eddy Merckx by inviting herself to a ride on his world-famous bicycle.
